  86. File Manager StepUp (or FM StepUp) is a utility that improves File
  87. Manager dramatically.  Instead of replacing File Manager, FM StepUp
  88. simply makes it better.  When you install FMStepUp, additional
  89. commands are added to the menus of the File Manager, and existing
  90. commands are enhanced.

  172. which you can "try before you buy".

  174. You may install the program in your system and use it for an
  175. evaluation period of up to 14 days. After that time, you are
  176. required to purchase a license for continued use of the software
  177. or else stop using it. You may freely copy and distribute
  178. evaluation copies of FM StepUp provided that all conditions
  179. specified in the distribution license are satisfied (please see
  180. the license agreement in the VENDINFO.DIZ file.)

  182. What's the difference between Evaluation and Licensed versions?
  183.  
  184. There is NO functional difference between the evaluation and
  185. licensed versions of this software (except for the 'registration
  186. reminders', displayed by the evaluation version).  Actually, it's
  187. the same program: you may convert an evaluation copy to a registered
  188. copy by entering your name and a registration code into the system.
  189. Similarly, a registered copy of the program may be
  190. 'unregistered' by deleting the registration code or by just copying
  191. the program to another machine.

  194. make them this way so you can have a real look at them to decide

  228. How to purchase a license for continued use of FM StepUp

  231. ChaoSoft licenses the software on the 'per-user', not a
  232. 'per-computer' basis.  This means that you may purchase a single
  233. individual license and use FM StepUp on more than one computer (for
  234. example, a desktop system and a notebook), provided that you are the
  235. only user of those computers and there is no possibility to use the
  236. Registered Copy by anybody else.
  237.  
  238. On the other hand, if more than one person uses a computer, every
  239. such user must purchase an individual license for continued use of
  240. the software, or a site license for the total number of users
  241. accessing the computer must be obtained.
  242.

  263. 1.4. Notes on using FM StepUp under Windows 95
  264. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  265.  
  266. If you are using Windows 95, you may find many features of FM StepUp
  267. in Explorer (right-button menus, history lists in dialog boxes,
  268. Quick View facility, etc.) However, you may still find the *old*
  269. File Manager, enhanced with FM StepUp, to be a good addition to your
  270. arcenal of file management tools.
  271.  
  272. Here is a short list of advantages of using File Manager with FM StepUp:
  273.  
  274. - File Manager runs *much* faster than Explorer;
  275.  
  276. - File Manager is a MDI (Multiple Document Interface) application,
  277.   that provides easy access to different directories at the same
  278.   time;
  279.   
  280. - FM StepUp provides a number of features absent in Explorer, like
  281.   special commands 'Total SIze', 'Run Screen Saver', and
  282.   customizable 'Execute' menu.
  283.   
  284. File Manager is not made available automatically when you install
  285. Windows 95, however you can easily add it to your desktop - just
  286. create a new shortcut and specify 'WINFILE.EXE' as its command line.
  287.  
  288. Of course, please keep in mind that FM StepUp was designed to be
  289. used under Windows 3.1/3.11, so some of its features may become
  290. useless or not functioning under Windows 95. Among them:
  291.  
  292. - No long file name support.  This is no fault of ours, it's a
  293.   limitation of 16-bit File Manager, included with Windows 95.  Had
  294.   Microsoft decide to include a 32-bit version of File Manager
  295.   (available with Windows NT) in the file set of Windows 95, you
  296.   would get long file names 'for free', but...
  297.  
  298. - Some DOS commands (TREE, etc.  ) are not updated by Microsoft to
  299.   be used under Windows 95, so they are not available for use in the
  300.   'Execute' menu.
  301.

  304. //      2.  INSTALLING File Manager StepUp
  305. //

  308. Unlike most other Windows applications, FM StepUp is not a stand-
  309. alone program; there is no special executable file you would run
  310. to start FM StepUp.  To use the program, all you need is to
  311. properly install it and, every time your run File Manager, FM
  312. StepUp will run automatically.
  313.  
  314. 2.1. Using Setup utility
  315. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  316.  
  317. FM StepUp comes with a convenient and flexible SETUP utility.  Use 
  318. SETUP when you want to temporarily activate/deactivate the 
  319. software or install it onto your hard disk or network drive for 
  320. permanent use.  
  321.  
  322. 2.1.1. HOW TO QUICKLY TRY OUT THE SOFTWARE
  323. ------------------------------------------
  324.  
  325. If you obtained FM StepUp on a diskette or CD-ROM and want to take 
  326. a look at the utility without installing it onto your hard disk, 
  327. run SETUP.EXE from the FMSTEPUP directory on the diskette or 
  328. CD-ROM and choose the 'Activate' button when prompted.  
  329.  
  330.   - to run SETUP.EXE, choose File | Run from main menu of Program 
  331.     Manager or File Manager and type into the 'Run' dialog box:  
  332.  
  333.         A:\FMSTEPUP\SETUP.EXE
  334.  
  335.     (assuming that the diskette is inserted into the 'A' floppy 
  336.     drive) 
  337.  
  338. After that, run File Manager.  You should see a new entry in the 
  339. main menu, 'StepUp' (Note:  If there is no such entry, FM StepUp 
  340. has not been activated; see information below for possible
  341. reasons.)  Of course, be sure that the diskette or CD with FM 
  342. StepUp is available while File Manager is loading!
  343.  
  344. Try this:
  345.  
  346. - place the mouse cursor in a File Manager window and click with 
  347.   the right button.  The Quick Menu should pop up with a number of 
  348.   choices; try some of them.  
  349.  
  350. - open 'StepUp' submenu and choose 'Special'; try commands from it;
  351.  
  352. - open standard dialog boxes of the File Manager: e.g., Run, Copy, 
  353.   Move,  etc.  Don't they look better with 3-D effects?  Are the 
  354.   history lists next to the editable fields handy?
  355.  
  356. - choose StepUp | Preferences: what do you want to customize?  Try 
  357.   buttons: Dialogs; Quick Menu; Execute Menu; try to change the 
  358.   menu name 'StepUp' to something else.  
  359.  
  360. Now, if you see that FM StepUp is not what you need, run SETUP.EXE 
  361. and choose the 'Deactivate' button.  In addition, to completely 
  362. clean your system, you should delete the FMSTEPUP.INI file from 
  363. your WINDOWS directory.
  364.  
  365. On the other hand, if you want to give the program a longer trial 
  366. and wish to install it onto your hard disk or network drive, 
  367. choose the 'Install' button when SETUP.EXE prompts you.  Please see
  368. the next section for more information.
  369.  
  370. 2.1.2. Installing on a hard disk or network drive
  371. -------------------------------------------------
  372.  
  373. If you've already copied all files from the FM StepUp 
  374. package onto your hard disk (for instance, you have extracted the 
  375. files from an archive), run SETUP.EXE and choose the 'Activate' 
  376. button.  
  377.  
  378. If you don't have the FM StepUp files on the hard disk, choose 
  379. 'Install' instead.  Then enter the path to the directory where 
  380. you want FM StepUp to be installed.  In this case, SETUP.EXE will
  381. copy all the files to the new location and then activate them.
  382. In addition, you'll be prompted to create a separate program group 
  383. for FM StepUp.  It isn't essential to have such a group, but it may
  384. be convenient.  In any case, it's your decision!
  385.  
  386. 2.1.3. Uninstalling FM StepUp
  387. -----------------------------
  388.  
  389. To prevent File Manager from loading and using FM StepUp, run 
  390. SETUP.EXE and choose the 'Deactivate' button. If you decide to 
  391. start using FM StepUp later on, run SETUP.EXE and choose 
  392. 'Activate'. 
  393.  
  394. Otherwise, to completely remove FM StepUp from your system, 
  395. deactivate it with the SETUP.EXE utility (see above) and remove 
  396. all the files from the directory on your hard disk or network 
  397. drive where you have installed FM StepUp.  In addition, erase file 
  398. FMSTEPUP.INI from your WINDOWS directory and, if you created it
  399. during installation, delete the 'FMStepUp' program group from the
  400. Program Manager.
  401.  
  402. 2.2. Registering your copy of FM StepUp
  403. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  404. Sometimes, FM StepUp displays a registration reminder, and the 
  405. 'About FM StepUp' screen reads 'Unregistered copy.'  If you have 
  406. registered FM StepUp and obtained your personal Registration Code 
  407. from us, you may use it to remove the registration reminder from 
  408. the screen and enter your name in the 'About FM StepUp' screen.  
  409. Choose 'Register' from the StepUp menu of File Manager and, when 
  410. the dialog box pops up, enter your name (exactly as it appears in 
  411. your Registration Acknowledgment) and the Registration Code.  
  412.  
  413. Be sure to enter your name EXACTLY as it's written in the 
  414. Registration Acknowledgment, including all letters in proper case 
  415. (upper or lower), spaces, punctuation, etc.  If you wish your name 
  416. to be spelled differently, please let us know and we'll assign you
  417. a new registration number.
  418.  
  419. 2.3. Manual installation/deinstallation
  420. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  421. If the automatic installation fails for any reason, you may install
  422. FM StepUp manually:
  423.  
  424. 1.  Create a directory for FM StepUp on your hard disk, say
  425.     C:\FMSTEPUP, and copy all the files from the FM StepUp
  426.     installation disk into that directory.  If you obtained the FM
  427.     StepUp files compressed in an archive, extract all the files
  428.     from it.
  429.  
  430. 2.  Close File Manager.
  431.  
  432. 3.  Open file WINFILE.INI for editing (using Notepad or any other
  433.     ASCII text editor).  This file is located in the WINDOWS 
  434.     directory on your hard disk (or the directory you specified 
  435.     when installing Windows).  Please note:  The file you need is 
  436.     WINFILE.INI, not the WIN.INI file!
  437.  
  438.     Find the section [AddOns] in this file and enter the following 
  439.     line right after the string [AddOns]:
  440.  
  441.         FM StepUp=C:\FMSTEPUP\FMSTEPUP.DLL
  442.  
  443.     (or specify the directory you copied FM StepUp's files into, 
  444.     if other than FMSTEPUP).
  445.  
  446.     The resulting portion of the WINFILE.INI should look like 
  447.     this:
  448.  
  449.         ...
  450.         [AddOns]
  451.         FM StepUp=C:\FMSTEPUP\FMSTEPUP.DLL
  452.         ...
  453.  
  454.     (... means other lines of the file).  Save the file.  
  455.  
  456. 5.  Run File Manager.
  457.  
  458. If the installation has been completed successfully, you should 
  459. see a new menu item, 'StepUp,' among the other items in the main 
  460. menu of the File Manager.  If you don't see the 'StepUp' entry in 
  461. the main menu of File Manager, an error has occurred.  Please 
  462. verify that you have done all the steps above and, in particular,
  463. you specified the correct path in the [AddOns] section of the 
  464. WINFILE.INI file.  Also, make sure that the files have not been 
  465. corrupted when they were copied onto your hard disk.  (Each file 
  466. should be the same size as each file on the installation diskette)
  467.  
  468. To manually uninstall FM StepUp:
  469.  
  470. 1.  Close File Manager and remove the line 'FM StepUp=...' from the
  471.     WINFILE.INI file (using Notepad, for example).  After that,
  472.     when you restart File Manager, FM StepUp will not be loaded. If
  473.     you decide later to start using FM StepUp again, enter the line
  474.     'FMStepUp=...' specifying the complete DOS path to FMSTEPUP.DLL
  475.     file, in the [AddOn] section of the WINFILE.INI file.  
  476.  
  477. The following steps should be completed only if you wish to 
  478. remove FM StepUp from your system permanently:  
  479.  
  480. 2.  Delete all the files from the directory on your hard disk where
  481.     you installed FM StepUp;
  482.  
  483. 3.  Delete file FMSTEPUP.INI from the WINDOWS directory; 
  484.  
  485. 4.  Delete program group 'FMStepUp' in the Program manager window, 
  486.     if there is one.  
  487.  
  488. We hope you'll change your mind!  
  489.  
  490. 2.3. A note about [Restrictions] for File Manager
  491. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  492. If you're a System Administrator, you may find that FM StepUp 
  493. gives too much power to Windows users.  That's why we made FM 
  494. StepUp able to restrict itself.  With FM StepUp, you may also 
  495. restrict a user's access to some of the features of the File 
  496. Manager in the same way as Program Manager.  
  497.  
  498.   NOTE:  FM StepUp is not intended to provide a comprehensive set 
  499.   of [Restrictions] for File Manager.  A separate utility, 'FM 
  500.   Guard,' specifically designed for this purpose, is available 
  501.   from ChaoSoft.  'FM Guard' allows you to disable any command in 
  502.   File Manager, limit user access to any drive of your choice, 
  503.   prevent closing of File Manager, etc.  For more information 
  504.   about 'FM Guard,' please contact us at the address at the end 
  505.   of this file.

  507. To restrict FM StepUp, create a file, 'FMSTEPUP.SYS' in the 
  508. WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory, insert a [Restrictions] section in the 
  509. file and add desired Boolean entries listed below to it.  
  510.  
  511.       Standard rules for specifying BOOLEAN entries of the WIN.INI
  512.       and SYSTEM.INI files apply here:  1/ON/TRUE/YES may be used 
  513.       interchangeably to turn the mode on; 0/OFF/FALSE/NO - to 
  514.       turn it off.  
  515.  
  516.       Note: the settings that affect standard dialog boxes (By 
  517.       File Type, Properties, Run, etc.) of File Manager require 
  518.       corresponding dialog boxes to be enabled through the 
  519.       'Preferences | Dialogs' command.  
  520.  
  521. NoShowHiddenSysFiles=BOOLEAN
  522.   disables the Show Hidden/System Files check box in the By File 
  523.   Type dialog box so that users will be unable to see any files 
  524.   you don't want them to; 
  525.  
  526. NoChangeFileAttrib=BOOLEAN  
  527.   disables the Attributes group of the Properties dialog box and 
  528.   prevents users from changing attributes of files, so that all 
  529.   the files made hidden by you will remain hidden; 
  530.  
  531. NoChangeFileDateTime=BOOLEAN  
  532.   disables OK button in the Change Date/Time dialog and prevents 
  533.   users from modifying these file attributes; 
  534.  
  535. NoUninstallStepUp=BOOLEAN  
  536.   prevents users from uninstalling FM StepUp, i.e. if a user 
  537.   modifies the WINFILE.INI and removes the 'FM StepUp=' entry, this
  538.   entry will be added again by FM StepUp automatically when 
  539.   exiting File Manager and FM StepUp will be loaded during the 
  540.   next run of File Manager.
  541.  
  542. NoSaveStepUpSettings=BOOLEAN  
  543.   prevents users from saving the current settings of FM StepUp 
  544.   on exit or on choosing File | Exit while the holding SHIFT key 
  545.   down (undocumented 'Save Settings Now' command); 
  546.  
  547. NoCustomizeExecMenu=BOOLEAN  
  548.   prevents users from customizing the Execute Menu of FM StepUp; 
  549.  
  550. NoDialogs=BOOLEAN
